Behold the spider-like machine of the future – the tri-band RT-AC5300. However, there is a pretty good possibility that most customers with a home will find the idea of spending the money for that particular router too preposterous.

Let’s begin with the router’s appearance. The point of having two separate 5GHz bands is to prevent crowding of the bands and distribute traffic more evenly. In this way, the connections stay stable, fast and reliable.

Additional features are the 1.4GHz dual-core Broadcom processor and the 512MB RAM. This tri-band router is packed with Multi-User Input, Multiple Output data streaming and game-enhancement options like QoS settings that give gaming applications traffic-network priority.

With regard to performance, starting with the 5 GHz band, the Asus RT-AC5300 managed to win the
Wi-Fi Transfer Speed competition against the Linksys WRT1900AC at all range tests (2m, 5m, 10m).
However, with the 2.4GHz band, the RT-AC5300 ranked second. In USB File Transfer Speed competition, Asus RT-AC5300 failed to reach the top places for both read and write speeds to the attached USB 3.0 hard drive.

Let’s start with building its image. The Asus RT-AC5300’s design may be a little bit more eye-catching, but if the antennas are the thing you like the model, then you won’t be disappointed. The Asus RT-AC3200 router has six antennas – two for each one of the three bands. The router measures 290mm by 188mm by 58mm and weighs 1kg.

Since it is a tri-band router, it can produce three simultaneous networks- one on the 2.4GHz band and two separate ones on 5GHz. The lightning speed of the combined data rate of 3200Mbps makes it easy for every gadget to work at full speed and ensures steady online gaming, 4K UHD video streams and last but not least, lag-free downloading. Similarly to the newest model, it uses ASUS Smart Connect to connedevice devices to the most efficient network according to the speed needed or to the devices’ age. It is a very good investment for gamers and people who would like to stream high def or even 4K content or download files in a blink of an eye. I believe that if you are a beginner and think that you will not use 90% of the features, it might be an option to take a look at the cheaper router options we listed below.

To say that the Netgear Nighthawk X8 R8500 AC5300 Smart Wi-Fi Router has an eye-catching name would be a massive understatement. The Nighthawk X8 R8500 router is packed with a bunch of killer features with a price tag to match them, of course.

To begin with, this device has a very sleek design; it represents a black rectangle adorned with a distinctive blue line across it and four identical antennas at the back. Rising up like obelisks, these antennas have another purpose besides giving the router a stylish look; each antenna has its own glowing blue light on its tip. This is the amplifier, which instead of resting on the router’s motherboard, now changes its location optimising stronger Wi-Fi connections with greater range, stronger signals with less noise and interference. What most users do not approve of it is the large body of the router, which requires some extra space.

The object of our attention today is the grandiose and sci-fi/bug like looking D-Link DIR-890L tri-band router. This router produces a strong Wi-Fi signal and serves as a network storage server when connected to an external hard drive. It is fast and straightforward, characteristics that no doubt will satisfy most typical users. To be honest, compared to its class colleagues the D-Link DIR-890L does not offer any exceptional features that can justify the 200-pound price tag.

We will most likely replace this particular router on the list with the big daddy- the D-Link DIR-895L – a true beast specs and performance wise. We are waiting for our test to finish up and update you how the DIR-895L is performing in real life scenarios.

Let’s discuss the distinctive design, for a start. The surface of the DIR-890L is colored in shiny red which is a very brave choice and may appeal to users with more extravagant taste. What you should bear in mind are the solid dimensions of this machine – 15.2 by 9.7 by 4.7 inches. You should also not forget the additional space-consuming six antennas which are not detachable. In spite of the gigantic size, the router appears to be a lot lighter than expected.

Let’s move on and focus on the features and hardware. On the back of the DIR-890L are located two USB ports (one 3.0 and one 2.0 port). They will prove useful in case you want to connect the router to a printer or an external hard drive. This router is equipped with a sufficient number of network ports too – four Gigabit LAN ports and one Gigabit Internet WAN port. You can check the status of the Internet connection, the Wi-Fi networks, and the two USB ports thanks to the status lights which are situated on the opposite side of the router.

There are similarities between the D-Link DIR-890L and the Asus RT-AC3200 in terms of processing power and bandwidth. Both products possess a Broadcom dual-core 1GHz processor and have three wireless bands. The 2.4GHz access point supports all 2.4GHz 802.11n/g/b Wi-Fi clients and tops at 600 Mbps. The two 5GHz access points, however, support 5GHz 802.11ac/n/a clients, topping at 1,300Mbps each. After you make the calculation, you get a total bandwidth of 3200Mbps. But there is a catch. Don’t be tricked by the statistics; since a single client can use only one of those bands, the top speed to a client isn’t going to go beyond 1300Mbps. Having this in mind, it appears that the D-Link DIR-890L is not faster than any AC1900 router.

The D-Link DIR-890L lacks MU-MIMO, but the Smart Connect technology comes as a compensation. The cool thing about this feature is that it makes the router automatically connect each client to the optimal band. The set-up is quite an easy one. The first step is plugging in the router to your computer. The second one is typing in the IP address provided. Finally, complete the configuration using the D-Link setup wizard.

With regard to performance, the router is reliable in everyday use as the Wi-Fi signal remains consistent and the unit doesn’t lose connection. This is particularly important since some routers appear to be pretty fast in tests but fail in daily use.

In test conditions, The D-Link DIR-890L performance using both the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz bands is decent and respectable but not as good as that of routers like the Asus RT-AC68U, the Netgear R7500, and Linksys WRT1900AC. On the other hand, when connected to a portable drive, the DIR-890L does very well and actually beats two of the winners in the other contest – the Asus RT-AC68U and the Netgear R7500.

In conclusion, the D-Link DIR-890L AC3200 is a great purchase in terms of Wi-Fi strength, stability, and reliability. It is recommended for smaller homes and multiple 5GHz clients. What may dissuade you from buying is the high price and the fact that this router is not the fastest, nor the one with complex configuration settings that the serious techies would like to play with.

With the MU-MIMO technology, you can rest assured that your work won’t be disturbed even if the rest of your house or office is streaming 4k videos or playing network demanding games.

Like other high-end routers, the Linksys offers three separate wireless bands. However, it outperforms its older brother, the Linksys Max-Stream EA9300 (AC4000), as well as the D-Link DIR-890L AC3200 and Asus RT-AC3200. This router produces three separate bands: one on 2.4GHz, which supports legacy devices and tops at 1000Mbps; and two separate 5GHz bands, which top at 2166Mbps each.

If you are a person who wants to possess the latest feature-rich technology and doesn’t grudge spending a little extra money on a router, then by any means – go ahead, it’s the natural choice. In case you are on a tight budget, there are affordable routers available on the market but you have to satisfy yourself with fewer features.

Ok, I admit, you might be raising your eyebrows in question what is this one doing in the list of today’s high-end gaming routers? I understand – it’s not tri-band, the specs are not extraordinary or anything like that. I still think it deserves a spot on the list for two reasons. Reason one is reliability – the signal is strong and it will never let you down. Reason two is performance  – it is a rock solid gaming router and it delivers solid speeds throughout the range with some cool gaming optimizations.

Unlike all the flagship routers on the list, it is an only dual band and it only delivers speeds of AC2600 – that’s more than half less than all the AC5400 routers on the list here. We all know that these speeds are theoretical and only achievable 3cm away from the router in ideal conditions. Most conditions are not ideal so here we are with this ASRock beast.

It comes with a dual-core 1.4Ghz Qualcomm processor, 512 RAM, and 128Mb flash storage. This engine allows it to deliver 800Mbps on the 2.4Ghz band and 1.73Gbps on the 5Ghz band. When it was initially released in 2015 it was one of the first routers to feature those speeds.

It features 4 Gigabit LAN ports and a single Gigabit WAN ports for modem conections. LAN speed can reach the impressive 937Mbps on any of the ethernet ports.  The antenna count is 8 but they are neatly tucked inside the router body so you won’t have any visible distractions from the sleek design. It has a true MU-MIMO capability and it is taking full advantage of the tech offering simultaneous connections to the router for multiple devices at the same time.

The GUI can be a bit clunky and when the router came out initially there were some issues with the firmware but it is all sorted now. The build quality lives up to AsRock’s name of very reliable tech manufacturer.

The one very cool feature of the G10 is the H2R streamer and portable router device. You can plug it in any TV’s HDMI port and enjoy DLNA and AirPlay streaming to the TV from any device connected to the router. You can also take it on the road and use it as a travel WiFi router for places where only a wired connection is available. Convenient, right?

TP-Link Archer C5400 is equivalent to D-Link DIR-890L AC3200 offering four Gigabit Ethernet ports. Should you need more, there are the Netgear R8300 with six and Linksys EA9500 MAX-STREAM AC5400 with the full eight ports. On the other hand, the more ports there are, the higher the price. I believe that the Archer offers enough ports for a reasonable price.

The TP-Link Archer C3200 is a high-end wireless router, the predecessor of the highly successful TP-Link Archer C5400. It combines most of the features that the newer version offers but one of the things that make it inferior is the overall wifi speed on all bands, which is reflected in the price, of course. The “inexperienced” Archer will satisfy all your needs for a slightly lower price than the big brother. I think that sounds pretty good if you don’t want to kill your budget paying for advanced features you might not use.

The Archer C3200’s design is slightly different from the design of the C5400. The latter has two more antennas. However, the C3200’s six antennas manage to maximize the coverage area better and improve stability and efficiency. While he C5400 is known for its small footprint, the C3200 is no slouch either – the router tops the charts measuring only 7.9 X 7.9 X 1.5 inches. TP-Link not only achieved great performance but also of compactness and beautiful design.

TP-Link Archer C3200 is a tri-band router, which runs three channels simultaneously, creating an opportunity for more devices to connect to the network without a drop in performance. SmartConnect ensures that each device is connected to the best available band and on the most suitable speed. The router comes with one 2.4GHz band and two separate 5GHz bands. It is surpassed by the Archer C5400 in terms of speed – the C3200 delivers “only” 600 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 1300 Mbps on each 5GHz band. Still, this is more than enough for shopping online, browsing social media and streaming music while watching some Netflix or playing a game. 1GHz dual-core CPU paired with three co-processors manages concurrent connections without interruption. TP-Link Archer C3200 does not include MU-MIMO technology which communicates with multiple devices at the same time ensuring 4X efficiency.

You can easily share files, movies, documents, and music through your network connecting your external hard drives to either of the USB 2.0 or the USB 3.0 port. There isn’t a difference in the number of the Gigabit Ethernet ports between the C3200 and C5400 feature- four ports enable lightning speed, contributing to a better performance of shared devices (consoles, PCs, TVs).

The TP-Link routers have very trouble-free setup and use. You manage the network settings, the parental controls and the media sharing from Android or iOS by using the Tether app. Don’t worry that someone might steal your personal information when you share the connection- you can just turn on the guest network and all your computers will be safe in a private network. The guest one is kept separate and private.

Finally, the TP-Link Archer C3200 tri-band router is a very reliable machine. It offers various useful options and ensures good performance. If you are not a hardcore gamer or you do not work with multiple demanding users in the network that might put extra pressure on the network, you will be satisfied with this little gem. Last but not least, the price is quite acceptable for the specs.

The D-Link EXO AC1750 DIR-869 is a Wi-Fi router that has a striking look and charm just like the tri-band D-Link Router DIR-890L but features the slightly inferior dual-band technology and slightly less shocking price tag. The DIR-869 is designed to satisfy users with less unlimited budgets but at the same time to provide an excellent level of performance.

As I mentioned above, the EXO AC1750 has a design that cannot escape people’s attention. The router‘s surface is half-black, half-orange, and the look is completed with four flat folding antennas. The DIR-869 is relatively compact with dimensions of only 8.72 x 6.30 x 2.38 inches. A part of the appearance is the thin LED lighting strip on the front side of the router that glows white when the device is in order and orange when it is rebooting or being reset. On the rear side, there are four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports and one Gigabit Ethernet WAN port. The lack of USB port is considered to be a serious flaw so you have to bear that in mind. Without a USB port, you can’t connect peripherals such as printers or external storage devices. On the back of the router, there is also a switch that you can use to turn the EXO from a router to a Wi-Fi extender.

A considerable advantage is the set-up of D-Link EXO since it is very easy and straightforward. Its interface is very efficient and simple; the Home page displays a network map with DHCP, IP addresses, and Internet connection status information. By flicking over to the Network page, you can edit LAN IP Address, Subnet Mask, and advanced DHCP settings. In order to change the SSID and password for each WiFi band as well as to assign security settings, select a Wi-Fi channel and an 802.11 operating mode. The Asus RT-AC66U is Asus’s first wireless router that can support the 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard. It is extremely fast, powerful, and feature-rich. It is without a shadow of a doubt one of the top best wireless dual-band machines available on the market. The RT-AC66U is secure and provides a great deal of control over your network.

Let’s look at the design and features, for a start. Not only is the design of the RT-AC66U sleek and contemporary, but it is also very clean and functional. This router can be put horizontally on any surface, mounted on a wall, it can also sit vertically on the provided stand. While some antennas are hidden inside the enclosure, there are three additional detachable and upgradable dipole antennas. The three antennas are a great touch because they can be repositioned in order to deliver the best performance. The RT-AC66U is equipped with four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for wired clients and one Gigabit Ethernet WAN port to connect to an Internet source. While D-Link’s EXO AC1750 DIR-869 doesn’t come with a USB port, the Asus router has two USB 2.0 ports. However, there are routers from the same price range like the Netgear R7000 Nighthawk and TP-Link Touch P5 which have a USB 3.0 port. Nevertheless, the 2.0 USB ports still give you the opportunity to attach an external hard drive or a printer. On the front, the ASUS router has nine LED indicators that show the status of USB and Ethernet ports, the Internet, and the wireless networks.

As a true dual-band router, the Asus RT-AC66U can deliver up to 450Mbps on of the 2.4GHz and up to 1.3 Gbps on the 5GHz band. An important detail that should be pointed out is that on the 2.4GHz band the router supports only the Wireless-N standard, whereas on the 5GHz frequency band it supports the latest 802.11ac standard. In terms of performance, in test conditions, at 15 feet, when used with ac client, the Asus router registers the amazing 339Mbps. It scores 208Mbps when used with a Wireless N client, which is still a very decent achievement.
On the 2.4GHz band, (the router can be used only with Wireless-N clients), it scored the modest 66Mbps at a close distance and 50Mbps at further distance. The RT-AC66U’s network storage performance is reverent. When connected to an external hard drive, the router shines with its 134Mbps for writing and 77Mbps for reading over a Gigabit Ethernet connection.

The set-up of this router is not really a complicated one. For the setup you can use the router’s Web interface and the Web-based wizard. Thanks to the latest firmware and AiCloud feature, you can share data stored on any computer in the network to remote clients. The Asus RT-AC66U certainly gives a good impression as it is packed with WPA/WPA2 wireless encryption, parental controls, UPnP, IPv6 support, traffic prioritization, guest access, QoS and WPS.

All in all, the Asus RT-AC66U, with the latest firmware, is probably on of the best dual-band router that stands out with its impressively fast 802.11ac 5GHz band performance and variety of features.

To begin with, TP-Link D2 has a very slick and clean design and it measures only 9.0 x 6.3 x 1.5 inches as opposed to most of the rest of the routers in this article, which can be quite bulky, aggressive and unattractive. It features three detachable antennas and high-powered amplifiers to boost your Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home. The flagship models are supplied with more and more powerful antennas (up to 8) and more powerful amplifiers, so they ensure greater range for larger houses. If your home is not too big or you live in an apartment, you will most likely be happy with the cheaper version. The Archer D2 features Advanced Beamforming technology which prevents signal scattering and ensures that the router focuses the Wi-Fi signal directly to the devices that are connected for more efficient network connection.

The TP-Link may be cheaper than most, but it features next generation Wi-Fi standard – the 802.11ac. What’s more, it is backward compatible with 802.11n and “g”, and supplies three times faster speed than wireless G speeds.

There can be no comparison between the Archer D2 and some of the high-end, tri-band routers in reference to speed that is delivered. Nowadays, however innovative and unique technology is, it will be shadowed by tomorrow’s tech without question. However, there is plenty of sufficient performance tech for less demanding applications and home use. One perfect example is the D-Link’s DIR-842 Dual Band Router that comes at a modest cost but promises plenty of performance, advanced settings, Quality of Service prioritization, etc.

The DIR-842 is a relatively compact router measuring 1.25 by 8.9 by 6 inches and featuring four external non-detachable antennas. The LED indicators on the top of the enclosure show the status of the Internet connections, Wi-Fi, WPS, and LAN ports. On the back of the router there are four Gigabit LAN ports, a WAN port, a WPS button, and the power button. The DIR-842 is powered by a 660MHz processor. A major drawback is the lack of a USB port but you can’t expect a budget router to have it all, can you?

The USB disadvantage is somehwat compensated by the 5-minute friendly set-up. The steps are simple: connect the router to a PC and an Internet source, complete the Web-based setup wizard, configure your network and Wi-Fi settings, set an admin password and off you go. Whenever you want to change the settings of your router, you can do it by using the Web-based management console, or by downloading the iOS and Android app on your smartphone or tablet. If you go to the basic settings tab,  you can enable/disable each band, name your WiFi networks and change passwords. In the advanced settings area you can manage security mode settings, 802.11 version, Wi-Fi Channel selection, Channel Width, and Transmission Power settings. On this menu, you can also create guest networks, but most importantly, assign network priority to various clients, thanks to the QoS.

Theoretically, the router promises 300Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 867Mbps on the 5GHz band. In terms of real-life performance, the D-Link DIR-842 delivers over 75Mbps on a 2.4GHz close-proximity test which is slightly, but still faster than the 74Mbps of the Netgear R6220 AC1200, for example. At a 30-feet test, it scores 41.5Mbps, falling behind the Netgear’s 48.3Mbps. With regard to the 5GHz band performance, the two routers again have extremely close results with the score of the DIR-842 being 332Mbps on the close-range test and 111Mbps on the 30-foot test, and that of the Netgear being 331Mbps and 104Mbps.

In conclusion, the D-Link DIR-842 AC1200 device is one of the best budget routers that offer effective dual-band wireless networking, super easy set-up, and fast throughput. For the money, you won’t get your hands on a USB port, but, then again, you receive the latest 802.11ac technology, an extra LAN port, plenty of management settings and speedy 5GHz performance.

Theoretically, it delivers up to 300 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz frequency and 433 Mbps on the 5 GHz frequency. The total bandwidth is 733 Mbps. This device is fitted with only two Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports and one WAN (Internet) port, whereas the Netgear R6220 has four LAN ports and a USB port.

The set-up is a no-brainer; just run the set-up wizard on a computer and it will guide you through the initial configuration settings. Afterwards, you can access the admin user interface and get into more advanced settings. Next, you have to connect all your devices to the network that is managed by the router. You will able to share files and folders, do media streaming, use a wireless printer, etc. I should point out that temporary drops WiFi signal have been reported by some users. They may last for a couple of seconds but may be rather frequent, especially in rooms further away from the router. These problems may be related to the firmware, as the RT-AC53’s hardware is capable of delivering stable wireless network connections at decent speeds.

All in all, the Asus RT-AC53 is a good purchase in terms of price, set-up, and hardware. Moreover, it is full of features like Traffic Manager QoS, Guest Network, Parental Controls, VPN server, DDNS, and IPv6 support.

Ok, I admit it – another router that might have no place on the list. I get it – only 300mbit, N standard, questionable brand (for some), not so many features and whatnot. But considering the price and the features, combined with a faultless device and great compactness, I think we have a great underdog we can all root for here. True, the Amazon price can b a bit pricey but if you’re in no hurry, you can always order it from GearBest or AliExpress for example for less than a few cups of coffee and have a great performing and portable device.

Xiaomi Mi Wireless Router 3C is a very well-designed device. It is not only a powerful router but also elegant and classy due to its slick look. The WiFi router is suitable for both home and small office environments featuring 64 MB of flash memory which promotes a lag-free and reliable network connection. You should definitely have this little gem in mind when browsing.

I already mentioned the design but it is worth to say it once again. The Xiaomi Mi 3C has an incredibly simple, clean and pleasant look. This little gem stands out because of its cream colour compared to most other routers that are usually painted in dark colours. There is a single LED that changes its colour to show the status of the router. What is more, it features 4 antennas for a more reliable connection and greater coverage across your home, while other cheap routers like the TP-Link Archer D2 AC750 have only three or less.

A definite disadvantage is the presence of only one 2.4GHz band and the lack of a 5GHz band. It features WiFi 802.11 b / g / n standards and reaches the speed of 300Mbps, which is significantly less than 600Mbps or 1300Mbps that the more expensive routers deliver. Nevertheless, the 3C will fulfil your demands at home for sure. On the back of the router, there are located one WAN port and two LAN ports with speeds of 10/100Mbps. The router doesn’t have a USB port at all, which will disappoint some of the users who have to connect a printer or share files. Undoubtedly, for the money you get what you pay for, right?

Besides the 64MB DDR2 RAM, the Xiaomi Mi is equipped with 16MB internal memory and MediaTek MT7628N processor that helps keep the internet connection alive and kicking. Moreover, the 3C supports a dual ROM partition system, which will protect you against corrupted firmware updates.

Can a cheap router compete with the expensive ones?

The answer to this question depends mainly on two things. One is the purpose you are going to need it for. Two is how many devices you want to connect to the router simultaneously. Let’s answer a few questions first.

What is  WiFi and WiFi Router?

WiFi is the common short name for wireless networking. Just like wired networks, wireless ones are used for transferring information between connected devices and the internet. WiFi uses radio waves while standard networking uses cables.

Most modern routers supporting the AC standard are backward compatible with the older b, g, and n standards. They come with different configurations of networks and bands and boasting a top speed of up to 5300Mbps combined.

What Is A Dual Band Router?

A single-band router can usually operate only on 2.4Ghz, which increases the risk of interference from electronic devices such as mobile phones, microwaves, and televisions. Thus, the router is slowed down and its beam range is limited.

On the other side, a dual band router is a device that exceeds the performance of the more simple, single-band routers. The dual-band routers usually have two separate networks: one on 2.4GHz and another on 5 GHz. The two bands are distinct from one another in terms of coverage and bandwidth. The 2.4GHz band may provide a longer coverage but it is inferior to the 5GHz band when it comes to the speed and transmission rates. The 5GHz band possesses more channels, it transmits data at a faster speed but its range is limited, due to the fact that higher frequencies cannot go through walls as easy as the lower ones. So, the single-band router won’t come close to the speed at which a dual-band router will upload or download files.

The cool thing of having a dual-band router is that it can work as two separate devices. The advantage of the two frequencies is that the 2.4GHz band is suitable for older generation devices, whereas the 5GHz band delivers higher speed for the newer ones. As a result, you don’t need to throw away the old reliable gadgets and spend a fortune on new ones.

What Is A Three Band Router And Do I need One?

Yes, you probably guessed it. Just like the difference between two band and single bands router, the three band routers have three separate network bands. They don’t have a third separate frequency similar to the single and dual band routers, they count on two separate 5Ghz networks instead to provide optimal performance.  The reason for that is the growing number of devices that need to be connected to a single WiFi router and the growing levels of interference and bandwidth saturation. We all have phones, tablets, gaming consoles, TV streaming boxes, laptops and more… If they all get connected to a single 2.4Ghz band you can imagine the dragging performance and interference that will create.
